The Story of Prophet Musa

A mother put her baby in a river because keeping him was more dangerous than letting him go. He was raised in the house of the man who was killing children like him.

The river and the palace

The instruction to his mother was extraordinary: when you fear for him, cast him into the river, and do not fear or grieve — We will return him to you (Qur'an 28:7).

The basket was taken from the water by Pharaoh's household. The child refused every nurse until his own mother was brought, so he was returned to her and she was paid to raise her own son. The Qur'an says it plainly: her eye was comforted, and she did not grieve.

The bush on the mountain

Years later, having fled Egypt, he saw a fire on a mountainside and went to fetch a brand from it. What he found was his Lord speaking to him (Qur'an 20:11-14).

The mission he was given terrified him — go to Pharaoh, who has transgressed. His response was not a refusal but a dua: My Lord, expand my chest for me, and make my task easy for me, and untie the knot from my tongue so they may understand me (Qur'an 20:25-28). He asked for the capacity before he asked for the outcome.

Between the army and the water

Cornered at the shore with Pharaoh's army closing, his people said: we are overtaken. He answered: No. My Lord is with me; He will guide me (Qur'an 26:62).

He struck the sea with his staff and each part stood like a great mountain (Qur'an 26:63). The way through was dry ground — and it only appeared once there was nowhere else to go.
