MIDNIGHT The Story of Prophet Adam
The first human being, the first mistake, and the first forgiveness. What Adam said after he slipped set the terms for every person who came after him.
Shaped from clay, taught the names
Allah shaped Adam from clay and breathed into him of His spirit. Before the angels were told to honour him, Adam was taught the names of all things — knowledge the angels themselves did not hold, and the reason a being made of earth was given rank above them (Qur'an 2:31).
The angels prostrated in honour. Iblis refused, and his refusal was pride: he judged fire better than clay (Qur'an 7:12). From that moment he became the declared enemy of Adam's children, and the whisper that follows every one of us traces back to that single act of arrogance.
The garden and the single boundary
Adam and his wife Hawwa were given a garden with everything permitted but one tree. Not a hidden trap — a clear line, stated plainly.
Iblis came not with force but with suggestion. He told them the tree would make them angels, or make them live forever, and he swore to them that he was sincere (Qur'an 7:20-21). They ate. The moment they did, what had been covered was exposed, and they began covering themselves with the leaves of the garden.
The sentence that opened the door
Here the story turns, and it turns on words. Adam did not argue. He did not blame his wife, or the whisperer, or the test itself. He said: Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be among the lost.
Allah accepted it. The Qur'an says Adam received words from his Lord and turned to Him, and He accepted his repentance (Qur'an 2:37). The first human error in history came with the first accepted apology, and the door that opened then has never been closed.
رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ
Rabbana zalamna anfusana wa il-lam taghfir lana wa tarhamna lanakunanna minal-khasireen
Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be among the lost.
