He lost his wealth, his children and his health, and the most he ever said about it was a description, never an accusation.
Everything, then nothing
Ayyub had land, family and strength, and lost all three. His body failed him over a long illness, and those who came to see him came with questions about what he must have done to deserve it.
The Qur'an does not dwell on the details of his suffering. It records what he said about it, which is the point of the story.
The gentlest complaint in scripture
When he finally spoke, he did not list his losses or ask why. He said: Affliction has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful (Qur'an 21:83).
He stated his condition and then praised the One he was speaking to. He never said: this is unjust. He is described in the same passage as an excellent servant; indeed he was one who repeatedly turned back (Qur'an 38:44).
Strike the ground with your foot
The answer, when it came, was ordinary and physical: Strike the ground with your foot; this is a spring, cool and drinkable (Qur'an 38:42). He washed and drank, and he was healed.
He was given his family back and the like of them with them (Qur'an 21:84). The relief did not arrive as an explanation of the years of illness. It simply arrived.
أَنِّي مَسَّنِيَ الضُّرُّ وَأَنتَ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ
Anni massaniyad-durru wa anta arhamur-rahimeen
Affliction has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.
