He argued his people out of their idols, took an axe to them, and walked into the fire they built for him with one sentence on his tongue.
The search that ended in one God
Ibrahim looked at a star, then the moon, then the sun, and refused each in turn because each one set (Qur'an 6:76-78). He would not worship anything that disappears.
He asked his father and his people the simplest question about the statues they served: do they hear you when you call, or benefit you, or harm you? Their only answer was that they had found their fathers doing so (Qur'an 26:72-74).
The axe and the largest idol
He broke them all except the largest, and left the axe hanging on it. When they demanded an answer, he told them to ask the big one — if it can speak (Qur'an 21:63).
For a moment they turned to themselves and admitted they were the wrongdoers. Then they reverted, and built a fire large enough to be seen from outside the city.
Coolness and peace
As he was thrown, he said: Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakeel — Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs (Bukhari 4563 records this as his saying in the fire).
The command came to the fire itself: Be coolness and peace for Ibrahim (Qur'an 21:69). Later he was tested again with his son, and again he submitted, and again it was replaced with something greater. The man who was ready to lose everything was the one given the Kaaba to raise.
