His first words in this world were a defence of his mother and a statement of exactly who he was — and who he was not.
The announcement to Maryam
Maryam was told she would bear a son though no man had touched her. Her question was the natural one, and the answer was that it is easy for Allah: When He decrees a matter, He only says to it: Be — and it is (Qur'an 19:35).
She carried the child to a distant place, and the pain brought her to the trunk of a palm tree, wishing she had died before this. She was answered with water at her feet and fresh dates above her head (Qur'an 19:23-25).
The cradle
She returned carrying him, and her people accused her. She had been told to say nothing, and she pointed to the infant. They asked how they could speak to a child in the cradle.
Then he spoke: Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet (Qur'an 19:30). The first sentence of his life settled both the accusation against his mother and the claim that would later be made about him.
The signs, and the limit
He healed the blind and the leper and, by Allah's permission, gave life to the dead — and the Qur'an repeats that phrase, by Allah's permission, each time it lists a miracle (Qur'an 3:49).
On the Day of Judgement he will be asked whether he told people to take him and his mother as gods, and he will answer that he only said what he was commanded: Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord (Qur'an 5:116-117).
إِنِّي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ آتَانِيَ الْكِتَابَ وَجَعَلَنِي نَبِيًّا
Inni 'abdullahi ataniyal-kitaba wa ja'alani nabiyya
