MIDNIGHT The Story of Prophet Yusuf
Thrown into a well by his brothers, sold, falsely accused and forgotten in a prison for years. Nothing in his conduct changed in any of those rooms.
The dream and the well
He saw eleven stars, the sun and the moon prostrating to him. His father Ya'qub told him not to relate the dream to his brothers, because a dream can be a target (Qur'an 12:4-5).
They took him out to play and left him at the bottom of a well, and came back to their father at nightfall, weeping, with false blood on a shirt. Ya'qub's answer was not a scream but a sentence: beautiful patience (Qur'an 12:18).
The house, the accusation, the prison
He was sold in Egypt and raised in the house of a man of rank. When the woman of the house tried to force him, he refused and said prison was dearer to him than what she called him to (Qur'an 12:33).
He was imprisoned despite his innocence being known. There he interpreted two dreams, asked one man to remember him to his master, and the man forgot — so he stayed several more years.
Power, and what he did with it
The king's own dream brought him out and put the treasury of Egypt in his hands. Years later his brothers came to buy grain, not recognising him.
When he finally told them who he was, he had every reason and every means to punish them. What he said was: No blame upon you today. May Allah forgive you, and He is the Most Merciful of the merciful (Qur'an 12:92).
لَا تَثْرِيبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْيَوْمَ يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ
La tathriba 'alaykumul-yawm, yaghfirullahu lakum
